What’s it like doing tech support?

Jody Franklin understands that people are afraid of technology. He says his mother doesn’t like to dust anything with buttons. So Jody helps people figure out how to plug it in, turn it on, and reset it. He likes technology but he’s also a poet and a free spirit. Deadlines are great, if someone else imposes them but it’s hard to keep a good mind still. Jody’s always been bright but school became much easier once a teacher noticed his dyslexia. What’s it like mixing politics and religion?

Politics was Joe Fuiten’s first love. Although he’s given up on becoming President of the United States, Joe is still very interested in political issues. He pastors an unusual church, even for a mega-church. They offer the typical services (worship, counseling, and a school) and some unusual ones (including auto repair, cemetery and a funeral home). But he’s also well known for his Pastor’s Picks; his choice on every contested election in the State of Washington and Northern Oregon. For more from Joe Fuiten click here.

What’s it like founding a company?

Wil Harris says that online advertising is quite different than you’d think. Advertisers think locally and are quite slow to adopt new methods. Wil should know. He is the founder of UK-based ChannelFlip, which presents professionally-produced short-form videos (less than 5 minutes) that people want to see. Apparently even after you prove the concept, it’s not easy to get convince advertisers to become sponsors. Fortunately, Wil learned arguing and persuading in law school. But now days, he spends more time doing financial modeling than beating the bushes. You deserve a break. To check out ChannelFlip click here.

What’s it like producing TV for the web?

Growing up in leisurely S. Cal. where media stories are local news, Eileen Rivera decided to pursue journalism.  She started as yearbook editor, mostly so the popular kids didn’t get all the attention. She moved on to traditional media but has settled into doing video on the web. Eileen is the producer for Leo Laporte’s This Week In Tech broadcast. And hosts her own shows on Androids (the phones) and Vampires (the books and movies). But she also speaks eloquently of what it’s like to fall in love. For more about Eileen’s work, click here.

What’s it like being a cartoonist?

I’ve thought of how much fun it would be to be a great cartoonist. Draw funny things for a living. But I can’t draw. Fortunately, Scott Johnson can. So he started Frog Pants Studios as a place to house his creativity. And when he’s not drawing, he’s making podcasts on technology, science fiction, and whatever interests him. If you were drawing a caricature of Scott Johnson, he would have a pen in one hand and a microphone in the other. For more about Scott Johnson’s cartoons click here.

What’s it like working for a startup?

He says you’ve got to deal with a lot of organizational issues if you’re going to make a dent in the world. And denting the world is his main goal. Follow Randall Bennett on Twitter. @randallbennett
