Darren Kitchen

What’s it like being a hacker?

Darren Kitchen has always loved computers. He explains his passion for technology, how he started Hak5, and why it’s good to have a supportive mother when the Feds visit your house. His path went from ballroom dancing in Williamsburg, VA to shooting a weekly show  in  SF (San Francisco for the uninitiated). Darren took some college classes but unofficially audited a lot more. Education coupled with doing things on your own leads to success, or at least a lot of fun. Or both if you’re lucky. If you like technology, you’ll love Hak5. Click here.

What’s it like to write music for movies?

Like most composers, Ed Goldfarb loves storytelling. And like many arrangers, he thinks in orchestra. He grew up playing the piano and by junior high, he got his first paid gigs. Later, the piano would help him make a living and introduce him to film director Francis Ford Coppola. When in high school, Ed used his keyboard skills to land a job as a church organist at a large Methodist church. He explains how he made it from church to the movies. For more on Ed click here.

Andrew Bosley

What’s it like to be an artist for a video game company?

Andrew Bosley is a artist. In high school that makes you special; in art school it’s the norm. But he says, the real fun is using art to solve problems. Andrew explains  why drawing quickly is essential to his job, how a concept artist differs from a character artist, and when you should compare yourself to others and when you shouldn’t. He also explains the difference between blueprints vs. inspiration, and how he met the Queen Mum at the National Gallery, sort of.
